The tragic cases of Candi Miller and Amber Nicole Thurman, reported by ProPublica, should not be a surprise. Candi's death was entirely preventable, yet it was precipitated by a climate created by Georgia legislators who pursued a near-total abortion ban earlier that year. This legislation not only imposed draconian penalties, including a potential 10-year prison sentence for violators, but also ignored the health and safety of women like Candi, leaving them vulnerable in critical situations.

The Georgia Legislature knew what it was doing.

Our Georgia research team uncovered documents showing that creating this environment was not an accident, but intentional. In signed documents gathered by Georgia Life Alliance, 17 Georgia legislators explicitly stated that there should be no exceptions to abortion bans—even in cases where the life of the mother is at risk. 

Furthermore, 52 legislators have signed a pledge asserting that they consider an embryo or fetus to have the same rights as a person, further complicating the issue and exacerbating the risks to maternal health.
